Should I double major in pre-law and music or just study music management/merchandising?
Question by johnblattnerstudios: Should I double major in pre-law and music or just study music management/merchandising?
Im thinking about colleges. I would like to work around music, but there is more money in law, which is why I plan on going to law school in 5 years, to study music/business law. Would a music management BA be good if I wanted to enter into law school, or should I take pre-law and the regular bachelor’s in music? I would rather study music management because that reflects what I would want to do in life, but some people recommend pre-law for those that want to enter law school. Thanks

Be very, very, VERY sure you know exactly what law entails. There are way more law grads than law jobs available. The days of guaranteed money are long gone, as are the days of a guaranteed job. Even if you land a 6-figure job, it will likely average out to less than minimum wage with the hours.
Go intern or get a file clerk/secretarial job at a law firm. Law is 90% writing. If you don’t like writing, long hours, etc. you won’t be a happy lawyer.
I don’t know who would recommend pre-law to a hopeful lawyer. Ignore that advice. Major in anything you please – it does not matter. That said, I highly recommend a writing-intensive major, like Philosophy or English. Music management is 100% fine – just be sure you supplement with Philosophy and English classes. Avoid any law-type classes. Law school will teach you the law; they do not have time to teach you how to read, write, and reason effectively. A pre-law major won’t be looked upon favorably by any law school, but a part-time job in a law office will. Doesn’t have to be fancy. Personally, I think taking any law class before entering law school is a mistake – but being exposed to law practice is definitely an advantage.
