Record label question?

Question by SinDelle Morte: Record label question?
Is it bad form to submit a demo to Record Label A when you have already signed with Record Label B? Record Label A asked for the demo before you were signed with Record Label B. Your contract with Label B is for one year.

Is it bad form/policy to submit a demo to Label A anyway and if you do, will Record Label A be annoyed or put off that you have submitted a demo when you are already under contract? You don’t want to miss the chance to work woth Record Label A (after your year contract with Label B if it doesn’t work out) but you also don’t want them to think you’ve wasted their time, as you are not free at this time. Should you send the demo to Label A and just tell them the situation or should you wait?

What would you do?

I’d definitely have a sit down talk with Label A, although they can be finicky. It would be important to recognize if in your current contract it says you can’t supply other labels with demos. If it says nothing about that, you should be okay. But with all of these questions that could become something serious like breach of contract… I’d hire a lawyer.
