Q&A: Where do online radio stations get their music from? And how do they let presenters get hold of it?
Question by Peteyt: Where do online radio stations get their music from? And how do they let presenters get hold of it?
I’ve been running a small online radio station for a while, playing un-copyrighted material, but we have recently went off the air as we are sorting out licenses so that we will be able to play copyrighted material.
What is a good service I could use to legally obtain music? The license service I will be using is Web Radio World, a company that deals with both PPL and PRS to give out small licenses for online radio stations with low listener counts that can not afford high licenses Radio World is also offering jonestm, a service which will give us some music for a monthly price. I can’t remember the price we where given, it wasn’t a bad one. However it’s mostly all the new stuff, chart stuff etc. Does anyone know a good site that offers either both new or old or just old and non-mainstream music?
Also, how do presenters get hold of this music. The problem is that because we are online our presenters stream from different locations. We had the idea of putting all the music we legally obtained on a password protected server, but the problem is this would still be deemed as file sharing. Any thoughts?
Thanks in ahead.
Thanks their for the reply but is there any possible monthly fee services, like pay 30 quid a month for as many songs for broadcasting only?

JonesTM also can send you older songs. They run $ 1.29 for an uncompressed wav file.
You can talk directly with the label but to be honest, it will be difficult to get service through them.
Good luck!
