Its a deal that allows you to market your own music or distribute it independently. This is what an artist who has their own label or has produced the album themselves without a major label deal would need. When Cash Money Records came out (independent label) they needed a way to get they’re music around the world aka a distribution deal because they already were signed to their own label a record deal was unnecessary . Distribution deals are more popular than ever now that anyone can record in a home studio (or create they’re own label) and everything is digital (downloads,mp3’s). When you hear or see, “Now available on Itunes” Itunes is the distributor.
