Q&A: What exactly do artist/music managers do?

Question by schp: What exactly do artist/music managers do?
I’m considering entering the market-research side of music business and would appreciate very much your advice.
In what ways do marketing positions in record labels different from those in music/artist management? Which of these two, or both, collaborates with the musician to decide on image, tours, events? Do record-label people work directly with the musicians or mainly through their managers only?
Thanks!!!

It all depends on the type and size of label in question. There are no traditional roles anymore at most indie labels. Artist Development reps (ADR) and Artist and Repertoire reps (A&R) will have alot to do with the Artist directly at some labels while marketing reps will work with sales to ensure that promotional items are targeted correctly. But as I said earlier, this is not set in stone and positions could vary. The manager will alaways work with the artist directly. Hope this helps a little.
