Q&A: Realistically, is it too late for me to pursue a career in the music business?

Question by Complex Kid: Realistically, is it too late for me to pursue a career in the music business?
I’m 20 years old, I’ll be 21 later this year, I’m a college student, just doing liberal arts, pretty close to getting the associates in that. It really wasn’t until a year ago that I took an interest in music and began to look at it as a potential career. I regret taking an interest in it so late, as opposed to when I was younger so that I could have been practicing and studying throughout my adolescence. I have some background in piano/music theory, yet stopped a few years back and am a bit rusty. I wasn’t as interested at the time and was sort of just going through the motions.

I’m definitely planning to learn a lot this summer, hopefully take lessons in guitar and brush up on piano/keyboard. You know, I know I’m probably not going to be a performer, but I’d like to be a producer/session player, you know, help these artists out, and just be around the music scene. Is this a realistic goal? Or should I forget it?

No. The best thing you can do is get on myspace. As corny as it sounds, it is the only reason some people are famous. Check out
3Oh!3, NeverShoutNever, Jeffree Star, J-Bigga, The Secret Handshake, and even Tila Tequila. They all recorded their own music (except for tila tequila) and Have made their fame through myspace. Adding people who listened and then they tell their friends and so on… But if you just want to be a session player, I’m really not sure. Your best bet would be a form of music major in college. Just play coffee shop gigs, and meet some people who know more about it. They will be able to help you more than any website. Or you could email an indie label band or an unsigned artist like J-Bigga and ask them for advice. Majority of them are extremely nice and really helpful.
I wish you all the luck in the world. I want to do the same thing.
