I’m not clear on how to go about getting legal clearance in the US for making an original music video to go with a recording of a cover song. Does the video part fall under a synchronization license, like adding music to a soundtrack? So would that require both a mechanical license and a synchronization license? Or does it require something else? And what’s the price range for licensing and royalties on a music video, if it’s only going on, say, YouTube and/or a private website? If I’m just one individual with less-than-exorbitant amounts of cash to spend, should I just say ‘forget it’ and stick to my own original material?
