I have a Bad Conduct Discharge,a 2ndDegree Robbery, and Grand Larceny…I have had prior banking experience, which is a rule out…and I have extensive Retail Management experience, just being blessed not to have my history run…all prior to 9/11.
Now any position I go through I get a criminal history run and it rules me out even if I am qualified by my employment history.
I have had my own Music Production Company in which is over…through Sony Music..I did fairly well, but that is not a steady career, if you do not hit it big off the start.
I am looking for something nice in the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area and nothing overboard as I know what I am facing but at least the opportunity.

I am a Human Resources manager for a bank here in town….and yes, when we do background checks, anything that has to do with stealing….even misdemeanors automatically knocks out the candidate. It makes me feel badly because I know that reform in someone’s life DOES happen, but the FDIC has their own ideas.
More and more employers are doing background checks than they ever used to do 10-15 years ago…..so sadly you may face the same outcome over and over.
If you have a head for business, perhaps you might consider looking at consulting. I did this for 3 years in Seattle and enjoyed the flexibility. You just have to determine what your niche is and market it.
On a flight back from our corporate office, I talked to a man next to me who was a contract nurse. Even though he was inherently a compassionate person, he never thought he would go into the medical field. But when he learned how much these travelling nurses were compensated and that he could pretty much choose the type of facility he worked at, he went back to school and has never regretted his new career choice.
One other option….banks and the FBI often contract former criminals to provide training to their frontline people. I remember a training video that I saw that was done by a man who had robbed several banks when he was younger. His message was powerful….how to identify someone in your teller line who was there to rob you.
Lastly….promise yourself that you will not beat yourself up for what is past. You would not be the person you are today if you had not experienced what you did.
Best wishes to you….. Judy in Albuquerque
