Q&A: How hard is it to get your music sold on the iTunes music store?

Question by Sam B: How hard is it to get your music sold on the iTunes music store?
A friend of mine from high school is in a band that has a few EP’s on the iTunes music store & I’m wondering whether or not to be impressed. It’s typical scream-o music, similar to Saosin, Hawthorne Heights, etc. (can’t give you more current examples as I haven’t heard a scream-o song in about 4 or 5 years). With the huge demand for these little emo scream-o hardcore bands, I figure it means one of two things; either it’s really impressive because there are so many bands of that nature for Apple to put on their music store, or it isn’t impressive at all because Apple is sucking up any half decent scream-o band they can get & selling their music. I just don’t know which. Anyone have any ideas?

I know that having a record label will get you very far.

You basically need to sign up as an artist, and make sure your music is all correct (Album art, audio format), and fill in more info about your music

However you can sign up for this service called TuneCore, who basically acts as a record label for artists who can’t get a major one, and they do they do the Apple deal for you.

So if my friend made music I didn’t like and made it into the iTunes store, it’s impressive. Sure, it’s not a platinum label, but it’s not something you and I can’t do with our hands behind our backs.
