Q&A: How does a cellphone contract extension work?

Question by AllanH2012: How does a cellphone contract extension work?
I have a family plan with AT&T. My contract still has about 6 months left on it, but I am eligible for an upgrade now. Does this mean that if I renew now and get a new phone my contract will expire in two years and six months? Or two years from today? Does the extension mean 2 years plus whatever number of months I still have? Thanks!

Are you sure you’re eligible. AT&T offers upgrades at 20 months.

Nonetheless, there is no such thing as a contract extension or renewal. If you use an upgrade, you sign a new 2 year contract. It ends 2 years from the date you sign.
