Question by biteme13: How do you sign a band that has members under the age of 18?
OK I posted a question the other night and didn’t get any insightful answers. Hoping this is different.
There are 3 of us taking a venture to start a record label. It’s more like management but we do have intentions of competing with major labels in the near future in the genre of music we are into.
We have about 4 prospective bands that we are interested in. One was picked by me to look at and they’re all really good, put together, great sound, recordings done…BUT they have a few members under 18. You can’t legally make someone sign a contract under the age of 18. They want signed though. ANd we wanna sign them. Is there any way we could have one member of the band that is old enough (Over 18) sign the contract for the label (Its bascially saying they are financially responsible for their own costs, and can’t have anything to do with drugs, animal abuse etc. & that we will set up shows and do promotion etc. )
Could we have a representative sign the contract w/o having them all sign it. Some sort of form that says they’ll be representing the band on the contract?

The parents or legal guardians of the under 18’s will have to sign for them.
You will need to consult a lawyer who specializes in contract law and child labor. There are certain areas where you will need the guidance of a knowledgeable lawyer. The under 18’s will have a tough time performing in bars and child labor laws may still apply.
