Q&A: How do you gain rights to sell music, and how much would that cost?
Question by Ask Tara: How do you gain rights to sell music, and how much would that cost?
My mom read that some teenagers make money selling mix CD’s they made themselves. I get fed up with the songs they put on mix series like Now That’s What I Call Music! The songs are always the ones they play over and over again on the radio. Is anyone here in this business? I want to know how to get the rights to sell songs and how much I’d have to pay for it.

I had the same idea long time ago. First I would look into who it is that own these CD’s “Now That’s What I Call Music” etc. For the most part you would contact the record label that owns the rights to the music and pay them a royalty or work out a contract with each of them. If you feel you can afford whatever the bottomline is from then on, you’re in business. It is alot of work but so is getting up at 7am every morning to be at work by 9 until your 70. Go for it!
