Is there money to be made? Can a artist make enough for a car payment just being an internet musician?

You could…I know people who make good money selling their music online. But…these are people who usually perform live regularly and, therefore, have built up a good, reliable following. I used myspace and some other sites to try to promote myself, without performing, and it didn’t really work out for me. People who use myspace care more about having a high number of friends than discovering new artists, let alone buying some unknown person’s $ 10+ CD when a lot of us are unwilling to buy a known artist’s entire CD (I know I don’t buy CDs anymore). Another thing is, of course, how good your music is and what genre it is. I’ve found that rock groups seem to do the best.
