Q&A: HELP!! I’m an indie artist working for a major label? Do they own me?
Question by Nick B: HELP!! I’m an indie artist working for a major label? Do they own me?
I work for a major label (yes , one of the big four) . For about 2 years I’ve been working on a set of songs I want to promote online. Of course I’ve been hearing alot of smack talk about indie artists and the internet so my question is this.
If I start to get some sort of attention online am I liable to them financially?
My contract only mentions that if I take any professional ventures that ‘can be deemed’ as conflict of interest , action can be taken against me. Now in my defense I am NOT a signed artist for them nor do I work in ANY WAY with their artists. I’m extremely nervous as I feel very confident about my music to the point where I want to release an album in November but I will not be able to survive with out this job.

Wow congradulations ! Well, if you are under THEIR contract, that means you cannot sign with any other labels. If you want to start promoting yourself online, start a myspace page, duh ! haha i think that is the easiest, and fasting thing to do to get your name out ! you see all famous and serious artists have their own myspace page, so why not?
If your getting attention online, it is about YOU, not about your label. just make sure you don’t agree to anything! and that’s that!
GOOD LUCK (:
