Q&A: Are “Pay for Performance” contracts fair for teachers?

Question by Secular Humanist: Are “Pay for Performance” contracts fair for teachers?
Some school systems are placing teachers under “pay for performance” contracts. In other words, a teacher’s salary is based on how well the students perform.

There are, however, factors involved which are beyond the teacher’s control, e.g., family situations in which education is not encouraged, peer pressure under which good students are sometimes bullied, lack of parental involvement, etc.

Considering the factors outside the teacher’s control, is it fair to base their salaries on the performance of their students?
NOTE FOR NOREEN: You wrote, “If a student fails due to external factors beyond a teachers control, a teacher should be bringing attention to that.
What is the school doing about getting the right help for that student?”

Why is that the school/teacher’s job?

No, the teacher should be evaluated by the parents instead. They are the customer.
