Nashville Music Industry Jobs?

Question by Erin: Nashville Music Industry Jobs?
I am looking to begin a career in the music industry. At this point I’m not sure exactly what I want to do. I’m looking into positions with talent/booking agencies, concert venues, radio stations, etc. I am wanting to move to Nashville and work there. I have applied at a couple talent agencies and looked on a couple radio staion sites. I’ve also checked out companies like Live Nation for positions at venues. I’m running out of resources. I haven’t come up with any good leads and I need help.

If anyone has any suggestions about how I can get started or where I can look I would really appreciate it. I’m 25 years old so I can’t really be working for free. I’ve done an internship in St. Louis with Live Nation at our amphitheatre with the production manager. I now need a job.

Thanks in advance.

Go to Nashville Craigslist and look in the help wanted section under music related jobs or “entertainment” …

But,honestly One of the skills you will need to navigate this business is good research skills…so even though I have some suggestions…I hesitate to give them 🙂

Just giving you a taste of what your going to face in this Business lol

While you are looking for your JOB in the industry, you may need to take on another unpaid internship and work a paying job somewhere else ( waiting tables, cashier,…) These jobs may seem like a waste of time, but the pay the bills and expose you to “working” with people.
As you build your knowledge base and Resume with internships you will start to know what areas of the industry really interest you.
Some internships are paid

Here are some websites to begin your research process.

In the meantime realize that this business often has no rhyme or reason to “success” in practical terms. It’s often being in the right place at the right time…interning can put you in that place, exposed to the right people and opportunity to show what you can do , even when your not getting “paid” for it.

The name of the game is networking and building relationships with those already in the industry, but don’t dismiss the idea of building relationships with those on the way up, next week they could be your boss 🙂

Since you are undecided about your exact “Niche” in the industry internships are a great way to explore the areas that may interest you. If you find that your don’t like a certain area or find out that it isn’t what you thought it would be in reality then there is no harm , no foul if you switch gears at this point.

The KEY in the Music and Entertainment industry is a WIDE knowledge and skill base – kinda like an Actor that is a “Triple Threat” ( i.g. can Act /Sing/Dance).

Also be aware of your personal online “content” Employers WILL Google you and look at your Facebook/Myspace content. You may want to limit the amount of “questionable” pictures and references to your “personal” activities. No kidding. – The last thing a potential employer wants to see is a PIC of you on FaceBook doing Beer Bongs in your Underware with Midgets>or a Profile describing how you like to ________.
This industry is about “IMAGE” and Marketing / Branding..
Start by Building your “BRAND” – who are YOU, what do YOU bring to the table,How are YOU unique…tell your story.
Also absolutely NO lying or grossly exaggerating on your RESUME – be honest.

Remember that the Key that most CEO’s and Industry people are shooting for when hiring is that they want to HIRE someone Smarter than them in a particular area.
Find something and Specialize ( yet still have diverse talents to bring to the table)

Good Luck
