Music Licensing for television shows on DVD?

Question by renovettegirl: Music Licensing for television shows on DVD?
Why it is some old shows are not out of DVD because there are problems getting the licensing for the music used in the show? Wouldn’t they of gotten the legal approval when they first ran the show? I am thinking of specifically of WKRP in Cincinnati. I read somewhere that musical licensing was the reason it wasn’t available on DVD.

legal approval for the original airing of tv shows does not always translate to dvd releases…after all…the writers and artists of those songs want all the revenue they can get from their material…
