MUSIC LAW!! only good law students and lawyers for this one…THANKS?

Question by jas: MUSIC LAW!! only good law students and lawyers for this one…THANKS?
okay: i signed to a label recently and i only signed the short form (the one that summarizes the long form but doesn’t specify anything.) i realized how screwed up the structure of my label was AFTER i signed, and i’ve been able to dodge having to sign the long form that details everything i’m obligated to do and everything my label is obligated to do.

i obtained a copy of the short form today for the purpose of taking it to a lawyer—and my label has no clue: the guy who claimed to be my lawyer now works for the label so i DEFINITELY can’t trust him.

(i know you’re gonna say “conflict of interest” and that would make the entire contract null and void BUT… but i have no proof i ever paid him a retainer fee because he offered to represent me as a favor so the only evidence i have is a witness who saw him say he would do it.

anyway the contract i signed is signed by me and the label owner but there’s no dates anywhere and no witness sig.

is it binding?
more underlying details: the other sig. on the contract is that of my manager (YES THE LABEL OWNER) so that’s another blantant conflic of interest but at the time i was unaware that she would be the owner.

and another thing: they’ve paid for a photo shoot and other small things but i have never signed off on any funds being spent in my behalf. if it’s my advance i should be able to have a say so about how my $ is spent. i have never accepted any PHYSICAL money from them so if i’m able to get out, do i owe anything?

(the contract i signed says nothing about money so i’m thinking i can refer to any money spent on me as “GIFTS”….and my manager and i haven’t yet signed a separate artist-manager agreement so i’m not yet obligated to her..

like i said earlier the structure of my label is ALL EFFED UP
and to clear ambiguity, the lawyer WAS my lawyer before i realized he worked for them behind my back. he DID look over it for me. he just didn’t tell me he was an effing unethical greedy liar.

It is probably binding. This is why you should never never never sign a music contract without first hiring an entertainment lawyer to look it over first.
