He was born in Naples on July 15, 1859 and already at a very early age recognized as mandolin virtuoso of the highest rank. Besides his activities as a performer he was highly regarded as a teacher and composer as well. Many compositions of his hand – he wrote more than 300 works for mandolin in all kinds of strengths – are written for his students and with the idea of elevating the mandolin and its unique possibilities as a concert instrument, in mind.
