1) An electronics store sells DVD players and cordless telephones. The store makes a $ 75 profit on the sale of each DVD player (d) and a $ 30 profit on the sale of each cordless telephone (c). The store wants to make a profit of at least $ 255.00 from its sales of DVD players and cordless phones. Which inequality describes this situation?
(a) 75d+30c < 255 (b) 75d+30c ≤ 255 (c) 75d+30c > 255
(d) 75d+30c ≥ 255

2) Tamara has a cell phone plan that charges $ 0.07 per minute plus a monthly fee of $ 19.00. She budgets $ 29.50 per month for total cell phone expenses without taxes. What is the maximum number of minutes Tamara could use her phone each month in order to stay within her budget?
(a) 150
(b) 271
(c) 421
(d) 692

3) An online music club has a one-time registration fee of $ 13.95 and charges $ 0.49 to buy each song. If Emma has $ 50.00 to join the club and buy songs, what is the maximum number of songs she can buy?
(a) 73
(b) 74
(c) 130
(d) 131

4) Peter begins his kindergarten year able to spell 10 words. He is going to learn to spell 2 new words every day. Write an inequality that can be used to determine how many days, d, it takes Peter to be able to spell at least 75 words. Use this inequality to determine the minimum number of whole days it will take for him to be able to spell at least 75 words.

5) A prom ticket at Smith High School $ 120. Tom is going to save money for the ticket by walking his neighbor’s dog for $ 15 per week. If Tom already has saved $ 22, what is the minimum number of weeks Tom must walk the dog to earn enough to pay for the prom ticket?

Answer by DanDGAF19
1) Answer: D

Reason: The company wants to make at least $ 255 and the sign > means great than, but with the _ under the sign, the equation now states greater than or equal to.

2) Answer: A

Reason: 1st you subtract the tax from the total $ 29.50 (29.50 – 19.00 = 10.50). Now you can find the number of minutes that you can have to divide 10.50 by .07 (10.50/.07 = 150)

3) Answer: A

Reason: This problem is very similar to #2. 1st, you subtrack the one time fee of $ 13.95 from your total of $ 50.00 (50.00 – 13.95 = 36.05). Now you have a total of $ 36.05 and now you can divide 49 cents ($ 0.49) from $ 36.05 (36.05/ .49 = 73.5714…). Because this problem is asking for the specific answer of how many songs, you can’t round to 74 songs.

4) Answer: 2d ≥ 75; d = 38

Reason: The inequality is 2d ≥ 75 because everyday Peter learns 2 words and you need the number of days to find the overall total days (d = days). To solve for d, divide both sides of the inequality by 2 (2d/2 = 75/2; d= 37.5 days). Because the problem is asking for the whole number of days, you have to round up 37.5 to 38.

5) Answer: 7 weeks

Reason: You have to form an inequality to find the number of weeks and the inequality that i made up is 15x + 22 ≥ 120, which x = the number of weeks. Like the last equation, you have to solve for x. 1st, subtract 22 from both sides (15x + 22 – 22 = 120 – 22; 15x = 98). Then, you have to divide each side by 15 to get x by itself (15x/15 = 98/15; x = 6.5333…). Like # 4, the question wants the number of whole weeks, or minimun amount of weeks, to get your total up to $ 120. Round 6.5333 to 7 for your final answer.
