The urge to take pictures of Christmas decorations prior to Thanksgiving was specifically deterred out of principal. I’m in firm agreement with Lewis Black (and Jacques Gude) that Thanksgiving used to be Thanksgiving, not Christmas part 1, and that’s the way it should be! Now that Thanksgiving is over, let the season begin!
The town of St. Paul goes to great lengths to show its seasonal spirit by decorating Rice Park in the middle of downtown with oodles of lights, a few statues, and a large and fully decorated Christmas Tree, all on display and fully lit 24 hours a day, 7 days a week throughout the season. They also have a free skating rink located right next to Rice Park and the decorations. It really is a pretty cool sight.
The image above was the first one taken this morning on my initial trip to the park to check out the decorations. I was quite taken with the angel statues blanketed with the all of the lights around them. Even though I like and participate in the commercialization of the season, I very much know what the celebration is about, or what it’s supposed to be about.
These trumpet playing angels took me straight to the moment of Christ’s birth and the celebration the angels must have had. If there was ever a time for beautiful, angelic music, it was that time, and oh the music they must have played!
On the technical side, it was extremely difficult to tame down the Christmas lights exposure in the HDR, only having a -2 EV limit on the dark side of the tonal range. One of the original RAW images had to be masked in after recovering a portion of the highlights in Adobe Camera RAW. Applied the Crisp preset from Topaz Adjust specifically to the statue to bring out more of its detail.
