Is the video broadcast of copyrighted music covered by Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI)?

Question by Johnny: Is the video broadcast of copyrighted music covered by Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI)?
Our church used to broadcast the entire service on public access television (including special music and hymns). We assumed that we were permitted to do this because we have a CCLI license. However, upon checking the CCLI website and Wikipedia, I saw no mention of broadcast rights at all!

What should I do? Should I edit out all the music from the DVDs and cable access shows? The idea is repulsive to me. Music is half the service–and often its the better half.

It certainly does not seem to cover the broadcast. Performance of nondramatic musical works in a church service is exempt from the license requirement, but once you transmit that performance, a license is necessary. Your options are to obtain a license from the appropriate rights holders (typically BMI, ASCAP, and/or SESAC) or remove the music.
