does the retrictive nature of mtv or your local top 40 station ,all of which exposure to a small number of artists who have significant corporate backing ,mean that someone else is really making music choices for us ?is this kind of narrow control of music inevitable?contract the experience of limp bizkit, which had corporate backing to the artists who had remained independent, like ani difranco

No matter what music you are listening to, it is likely that “someone” is making choices. “Someone” decides which artist to sign to the label, “someone” decides which songs off the album should be promoted, “someone” fronted the money to make the album.

Independent or corporate; all genres of music experience this. Rap labels look for new artists to take the music further, just as these artists look for rap labels to give them a large audience and make it big. 50 cent and G unit are prime examples. Before 50 cent it was Eminem hooking up with Dr. Dre. Contrast their lyrics with those of the Sugarhill Gang, one of the earliest rap groups and you get a sense of how music has changed.

Artists are signed because they fill a niche to reach an untapped audience, or to capitalize on a similar artist who has opened new territory for a certain type of music.

The internet is changing things, but the more they change the more they stay the same.
