a customer who needs a job done in their home requested some type of legal document[contract] to be signed before i start to work on the home.

It sounds like you’re going to perform some sort of service for this homeowner, so in general, that would mean that the best type of form to use would be a general service-type agreement. Services Agreements come in a lot of different varieties, and of course, you’re going to need to make sure that you have one that balances the risks that you take by working on someone’s home against the benefits you stand to gain financially as a result. Additionally, most services agreements also only provide the basic information needed (general terms) and don’t cover the actual specifics of the job you’re going to do (which can be very legally dangerous).

What this really means is that you probably need to have at least a contract professional (or an attorney if you have more money) talk in more detail with you and help you draft an agreement. Try doing a Google search for contract negotiators.
