How to get into the music industry?

Question by Sam Lowlely: How to get into the music industry?
I’ve always wanted to become a singer when I was younger around age 9. I just want to know the basics about becoming recorded and “famous”. I do very well in school and I’ve done many school solos and made it State honor choirs. But do you think this is good enough? I’m 13 but going on 14 in one month. I was going to start working on my voice and look last month but I sprained my ankle and now I can’t workout, dance, or sing.

The reason I want to go into the industry is because singing makes me happy. I don’t have any friends at school and going to choir makes me feel better but I didn’t go out for high school show choir because I was bullied. Doing this is my dream and what I want to do. Singing & acting our my strengths because I always get a lead role.

Should I try both acting and singing? I really want this to become a reality so please tell me what I should do and how I can contact someone. 🙂

You cant just contact someone & get a record deal … it takes years & years of hard work & patience for anyone to even be noticed
Its just luck to become famous

I would advise you create a myspace and youtube page … regularly upload videos of you singing covers or your own songs. This will help build basic fan bases. Also artist such as ‘justin bieber’ have become know through youtube. Also these may help get regular, honest and encouraging feedback. Remeber upload regulary and you should get Many subscribers

I would advise you make a demo. Send this to local labels, inependant, minor and major labels …
I would advise you ask a producer or buy a instumental to sing over. Make the lyrics & vocals your own to show that your independant.

Tips which would help you get noticed or for the future
– I would learn music theory. This may be a massive help in the future

– Learn a insturument such as piano or guitar to fall back on or to boost your knowledge of music
Its a extra aspect as well as your singing. This may help you if you want to songwrite too.

– Have a instrest in ALL aspects of music, from classical, rock to pop, country and rap. This will really help you. It has helped me ALOT as you learn different styles, techniques of singing. Such as mariah carey, andrea bocelli, barbra streisand, lauryn hill, Shania twain, faith hill, brian mcknight, Freddie mercury, prince, elvis Presley etc

Either get a vocal coach/teacher or learn yourself. If you decide to learn yourself i would advise
-breathing techniques
-warm up & cool downs
-vocal exercises
-learning your vocal limits & not pushing them
-learn your octave range & about octave range.
-the best artist your vocals relate to (depending on pitch, tone & tempo)

I would maybe try acting later. 2 at the same time is overloading your work when there is so much to learn
As your 14 MAKE SURE that school work is a Priority!! I can assure you that after 11 years of education you will be dissapointed if you dont get what your able to get. So make sure school is your 1st priotity along with family!
Music comes 2nd!!!
