How do musicians get paid now a days when so much music is downloadable for free?

Question by funkys: How do musicians get paid now a days when so much music is downloadable for free?
I’m a music journalist and I have a lot of good ideas for this answer…band’s tour, bands still sign contract with recording labels, etc. but generally speaking are musicians able to be ROCK STARS the way they were before the internet?

How would a young band aspiring get into the mix and become successful?

umm there is actually great music being made right now…The Black Keys, The White Stripes (jack white) ..the list goes on though.

Don’t you know downloading for free is stealing?
I’m not sure there are any more ROCK STARS because the music of the last 10-15 years has been so damn bad.
