How do films promote the music industry?

Question by Michael: How do films promote the music industry?
I am wondering if anybody can post some links on this topic, and/or give some insight on this topic.

I am having lots of trouble finding information, and I would like to know how films promote the artists and the music industry itself and how the music industry can promote films.

ie.) How a specific song from a film hits the top of the music charts due to the fact of the film’s rising success.

Well, take My Heart Goes On by Celine Dion.
It was number 1 all over the world because it was used to promote Titanic.
And every film now has a ‘song’ to promote it, and invariably the artist has a huge success.
Also, they’re released as soundtracks so the record company gets a pot of money.
Also, most film studios are owned by large corporations who have record companies as subsidiaries (Sony, Fox, Warner Brothers, Dreamworks), and so they’re really just doing what they can to milk the cash out of everywhere they can think of.
Including McDonalds.
