Most bands (since they aren’t signed to record labels) sell their MP3s/CDs/shirts/stickers/etc. without the help of corporations. You can do this quite easily… there are sites that allow you to build your own store, sell directly to fans, and keep more of your profits.

One example is: www.myfavoriteband.com.
You can upload and sell MP3s along with CDs, shirts, and any other merch that you already have. It’s free to set up your store, you can post an unlimited number of items, and the site doesn’t profit from your sales. The only money taken out of your sales is to cover PayPal’s minimal fees (about 2.9% + 30 cents) for the sale. This method is better than iTunes and other large distribution companies, because they take a huge chunk of your profits.

A copyright at this point isn’t necessary. You’d only have to worry about this if you were big enough to be signed to a record label… and if this happens, you won’t have to worry about it, because they’ll take care of that for you. If you’re really, really afraid of your music being taken by another band and sold, then mail yourself your own music and don’t open it. It’s called a “poor man’s copyright.”
