Going Into ‘Administration’ – Please Help?
Question by jayturbry: Going Into ‘Administration’ – Please Help?
As I was enjoying time with my family on Christmas Eve my boss called my mobile phone to say that the music and DVD store/company I work for has gone into administration and we have almost certainly lost our jobs. Firstly I was shocked to hear this as in light of other companies also going the same way recently it seems to be happening everywhere, but I was horrified as for at least a month now I’ve been specifically told by the management that the company is fine, our jobs are fine and there’s nothing to worry about. The signs have been clear for a while that things were heading this way but I feel I’ve been deceived by the company I’ve worked so hard for by being kept in the dark, only then to be told at a time like Christmas Eve, when it’s almost certain that somebody could have announced it long before.
I’m now in a lot of distress as I’m being told by my manager that if I’m offered a job I should grab it with both hands as all our jobs are doomed. However, I don’t want to forfeit anything I’m rightfully entitled to (e.g. leaving pay/redundancy) by leaving early. It so happens that I have been offered another job but my current management will not shed any information on how long I have left in employment or under what circumstances. I’m sure I have a right to information and having worked with the company for a year and eight months (not including the original four months as a Christmas temp – a total of two years) I believe I’m entitled to something.
I’d like to know what my rights are as the employee of a company that insists on abysmal communication with its staff at such a crucial time.
The company has asked that all employees continue to work as normal until the branch’s stock runs out (this could be a matter of days or a matter of months – I feel insulted by being expected to carry on in these conditions for a indefinite amount of time). Customers are now angry and baying for blood as their Christmas gift vouchers are deactivated and ‘ineligible for refund’ so it’s us sales assistants left fending for the company when we’re being given very little information from them and no respect in return. I truly feel like a puppet on a string aboard a sinking ship.
In England, U.K.

Okay, been with the company little over a year and you won’t serverance pay maybe but you manager telling you grab onto a opening. Hello—do you understand that the company is doing this b/c of the economy!!!!! Do U THINK YOUR GOING TO GET another job if you hold out for serverance pay. I find it unlikely you will get serveance pay. You better listen to the manager and noooo, how you been watching the news about the all the layoffs—do you think they had rights!!!
