Full time employment as musician?

Question by Alex Goldstein: Full time employment as musician?
I am an aspiring trombonist. I was wondering if most musicians are either 1) employed part time and work second jobs when not playing in clubs or other stuff 2) employed by large orchestras, guaranteed work for contract
or are there companies that hire musicians and pay them a salary, so the musician has guaranteed work. would those companies exist, as people would call them to request different performers? not required in answer, but does anyone know of any businesses like that if they do in fact exist?

Sorry for the terrible way the question is written. couldn’t really think of a better way to write it for some reason.thanks for answers!

I think most musician do it on the side either with a group of friends, or individually. Very few make a living at it, especially in the beginning. If you can’t get together with friends maybe you could start you own business and make posters or post ads on craigslist that you would be available for parties/events.
