Fred Elizalde and his Anglo American Band….Crazy Rhythm…1929

This is the finest version l have heard of this song.It really needs to be heard at full volume with headsets on, to fully appreciate the arrangement and playing.The 3 trumpets playing in unison is marvellous and Rollini has never been recorded as well as this before.The band’s sessions were mainly on a Sunday morning ,in Leicester Square London, above the Empire Theatre (now cinema) Prior to the Savoy engagement Elizalde had arranged for Ambrose and recorded in the studios, work with some Ambrose’s musicians.He also made records with his Cambridge university band.In 1927 he was voted by the public as 2nd most liked band after Ambrose, in the Melody Maker magazine.After the Savoy contract was not renewed, he toured northern England and Scotland (where he was met with derision) Chelsea Quealey his star US trumpet player walked out suddenly without notice (probably due to the chaotic organisation of Fred’s band)Elizalde in an effort to keep the band together,almost became bankrupt with bankrolling the band.The end came in late 1929.Eventually he moved to Spain and got himself injured fighting for Franco’s fascists.Afterwhich he quickly fell into obscurity,dying in 1977.Sadly Rollini does not appear to have been used for session work for other labels ie Bidgood,Hudson or Firman.Though Quealey did record.It seems that Fred was not the brightest when it came to PR.He upset the management at the Savoy for not adhering to customers musical dictates.Then after his contract was

British band Candlewick Green appeared on UK TV talent show Opportunity Knocks winning for some 8 consecutive weeks. They obtained a record contract as a result and released a few singles but this 1974 single was their only UK top 30 hit. The track is co-written by Des Dyer of UK band Jigsaw ( `Sky High` fame ) who shared the same management as Candlewick Green. Jigsaw had recorded the track as a future album track . Candlewick Green asked if they could record a cover and release it as a single. Jigsaw agreed and Candlewick Green had their only charting hit.
