Don’t you think BGT’s Susan Boyle is too theatrical to be a recording artist?
Question by Nelly G: Don’t you think BGT’s Susan Boyle is too theatrical to be a recording artist?
I’ve heard alot of people saying ‘Oh, she’s going to be a recording artist, she’ll be a singer”
Susan has FANTASTIC singing talent, there is no doubt about that. When she started singing my mouth fell on the floor. But about halfway into her singing another word popped into my head -theatrical
Honestly, when you listen to her singing, you’ll love it, yes, but it will occur to you that ‘hey, this isn’t the kind of voice you hear mainstream. This is theatrical. You’d hear this type of voice on Broadway or something.’
Broadway stars don’t get recording contracts. They just perform onstage. They aren’t solo artists, they aren’t recording artists like you think she will be, they are Broadway performers.
I think that’s the best career path for Susan. I watched her performance about 10 times, and it still sounded very theatrical. I thought ‘Wow, if this woman was on Broadway, man, she’d steal the whole show!’
In my opinion or course, she is not cut out to be a mainstream recording artist.

Susan’s goal (stated to Simon) was to sing before a large audience.
I don’t think she’ll care if she is not signed by a label – though some broadway singers are.
