Does this sound like a scam?

Question by Chris: Does this sound like a scam?
My band sent out a demo to a legitimate independent record label that has some fairly recognized bands on it (one of the bands has a video with 4 million views on youtube). After several weeks, we received an email from the owner of the company, which seemed to be personally written out, and he said something along the lines of us sounding not bad and that we should contact a music studio he also owns which he uses to record the bands on his label. He said to let him know when we set up a date, because he would like to be there for some of the recording. We contacted the studio and they told us to record a 3 song demo there would be a fee of over $ 1000. I have heard that if anyone wants you to pay for something in the music industry that is a bad sign. But if its at such an early stage where a record label owner is just interested in what a band might sound like with good quality recording, would this still be considered some sort of scam? Do studios normally pay for a band to record even before they are ready to offer a deal? Would this be a possibly good opportunity or does this sound like a scam?

They never charge you for this. If they think you have a chance they would want to pay you. It’s a scam.
