Can artists create contracts restricting resale of their work?

Question by Lee: Can artists create contracts restricting resale of their work?
What I mean is can they create agreements that their works cannot be resold, for example an oil paintings artist. Could he create an agreement restricting resale until after his death to allow him to control pricing while he is alive?

In Canada it is the copyright act that an artist can use to stipulate how, when, where, why and how their intellectual property will be used.
