But what do they DO?
Question by bamakatt: But what do they DO?
I read music reviews frequently; just trying to stay on top of things and to learn about anything new coming out in any of the several genres I dig. Here’s what puzzles me:
In a lot of those reviews (especially,it seems,in reviews of R&B and hip-hop/rap although I see it in all kinds of music) it seems like the “Producer” of a CD or single is given as much, sometimes even MORE,credit than the artist. What’s up with that? I’ve been a theater and film actor since the mid 70s. I know what a theatrical producer does. What does a music producer do that warrants being sometimes seen as more integral to the success of a CD than the person actually performing? Just curious…..

The artist provides the lyrics and melody of the song, the producer brings it to life with his own artistic inputs, he has a recording studio where they record the music, he has all the best up to the minute equipment, he will add compositions to the structure of the song. The producer, if he does his job right, turns songs into hits!!!
