Berklee Major in Music Business/Management? How hard is it to get in?

Question by Lycanthropyyy: Berklee Major in Music Business/Management? How hard is it to get in?
I want to go to Berklee for either Music Business/Management, Or Music Production and Engineering. Music means more to me than anything. If I could, I’d marry it. I really want to go to Berklee, it’s right in Boston – so I don’t need to move far away. But the only thing is.. Even though Music is so important to me. I lack some musical skills. I’ve played guitar for 4 years, but I can’t read notes. I taught myself. And I’ve been told that – Considering I can’t read notes or Tabs and I play by ear – That I’m very talented. My Cousin is teaching me drums now. I really have no experience with actually working with this stuff, but I know as much as I possibly can from research, and so on. My grades are pretty good, As and Bs for the most part. I’m a freshman in Highschool. 14 years old, and so on. You know all that.

So what are my chances? There’s nothing else I can see myself doing in my future. I’m taking as many music courses in school as possible (Music Theory, Music Appreciation, Popular Music, and so on.)

Howdy, Berklee is a great school, and if you’re interested in getting in they very well might have an audition, and for that you’re going to need to know how to read music.

Now, even if you can get in without that much proficiency in your music theory and music reading skills, you’re going to have a heck of a time staying up with the coursework if you can’t read once you are accepted. Trust me. As a drummer who went to school for music not being able to read, it was a big issue for me to learn how to read AND how to play not only drums but OTHER instruments, which you’ll no doubt be required to do.

You’ve got TONS of time. Start learning to read music now. . .guitar might be the easiest thing to get started learning. . .don’t restrict yourself to tab. In school they’re not going to be reading tab, they’re going to be reading scores, so you’ve gotta’ know the notes.

If you totally dig music, and you’re great at it. . you’ll make it. Start studying now though so you’re ready in 3 years when you need to start applying!

Cheers,
Doc
