Jay Whidden was the very epitome of the American stereotype.Changing from Montana cattle rancher, to dance band leader, was effortless to this super confident, brash cheerful guy.He had a wanderlust, and toured the English speaking world,a success where ever he played. His main home in the 1920s was England. He had visited in 1913 and returned a few years later.Immediately persuaded the Hotel metropole in London to hire him.He then quickly convinced Columbia records to give him a contract. Then he set up several private hire bands.Next the BBC got caught up with his infectious personality and his band were the first to broadcast away from the Savoy Hotel. All this within 6 months of arriving.Later he moved to the Carlton Hotel.1931 saw the end of Jay in Britain.he argued with the hotel management and got sacked. He took his British wife with him to California where he started again from scratch and became successful. Then again he left everything to work in Australia.A happy retirement beckoned with onset of WW2.He and his Liverpool wife lived out the rest of their lives in sunny California.Jay’s bands were not exceptional, but his ebullient personality was just right for the British 1920s.He was very successful in that decade, but is largely forgotten as he did not leave us a memorable catalogue of records.”up and at em” is his best record, and the title could easily have been his personal motto.
