Good producers are often good musicians. If you want to study it in college, then I hope you’re at a school that specializes in commercial musicianship (like Berklee). Otherwise, music production is vocational, so its’s not the kind of thing you’d study at a college. You might want to study marketing, business, art or something that you can tie into being in the entertainment industry.
What I’d recommend, though, is for you to study a conventional route, but do music stuff on the side. Buy some production equipment and software (ProTools, samplers, decks, etc.) and tinker with it. Practice remixing popular songs or write your own. Upload your projects to MySpace and network with local musicians. Once you get good, offer your services to friends and local bands.
And don’t be disappointed if you’re not the next Nigel Godrich or Brian Eno. A lot of successful producers never make it beyond the fine print on the liner notes. But they do earn their reputations in the right circles.
