Q&A: Why do artists need record labels?

Question by chicojaunito: Why do artists need record labels?
I know to get started in a music career you have backing from the industry because they need money to produce their music. But once you’re earning millions of dollars why do they need to continue answering to record label executives?

Because those millions of dollars (which in reality only a select few even get close to that) comes directly from those labels. You sign a contract with labels, and they basically own a part of what you do. In return, they promote you, fund you, and help you make more money for yourself. It’s the contract that is the most binding and the fact that those labels are HELPING.
