He discusses the point at which an artist becomes big enough that they no longer need their record label. This allows the artist to engage in hard-ball negotiations with the label and sign lucrative music contracts. Record labels, he states, concerned about their image and stock value are willing to pay big money to sign the artist and continue to produce their music.
