With the advent of compressed audio and internet file sharing, will the record industry die out soon?

Question by jrc_vergara: With the advent of compressed audio and internet file sharing, will the record industry die out soon?
As a starting music artist, I haven’t signed any contracts with record labels yet (I’m only 15 years old). I’m not sure if I should devote my music-making to websites such as MySpace, or to an average record label. Initially, I just wanted to make music for three reasons: (1) It’s a hobby and an art I’m devoted to. (2) It’s a source of income. (3) To make myself famous.

I don’t think the music industry will die out completely. From what I hear, most artists on labels don’t make very much from record sales. They tour and sell merchandise for money. If I were you, I’d definitely set up a MySpace – every band in the known world has one, even bands on major labels. Plus, it provides you with direct feedback from listeners. Once you’ve got your page established, have your demo ready and GET GIGS. Even if it’s a crappy open mic night in a coffee shop playing to four people, exposure is exposure. If you’re good, people will remember it – and seek you out. I hope that helps.
