Question by Searbear91: the music business- dream job.?
What is the best way to get involved with the music industry? I would love to be able to slowly work my way in to this business. I am going to finish up a year at my current university (freshman) and either go to a local community college to take business classes while doing internships around my area OR finish up the year and then go to Full Sail University in Florida. I would like to manage bands/tours or own my own recording studio (eventually) or a club that books bands and such. Any tips on how to make this a successful job?

The best way to get involved in the music business from my experience is to start working in some facet of the industry as an intern. A music business education can be helpful but there is nothing that replaces knowing people and having relevant work experience so what I would do is I would approach local businesses – clubs, radio stations, promoters etc and ask if they have internship programs in exchange for college credit. If that doesn’t work find a big local band and volunteer your time to be a part of their street team or do promotions and marketing for them in exchange for meeting their business contacts and free admission to their shows.
Most people I know in the business started at some very humble job that got their foot in the door and worked their way up.
Hope that helps,
Rick
