How do I send professional letters about myself to music industry professionals?
Question by ARS MAGNA: How do I send professional letters about myself to music industry professionals?
I need help, but it’s not a press kit I need help with. I am an up & coming local musician, I am trying to e-mail radio stations with my music, the local news also does features on native musicians… I am e-mailing booking agents, etc. How do I promote myself without tooting my own horn? What is the proper set-up for a professional music industry letter? I’d appreciate your help.

The simplest solution is to call the radio station. Depending on where you’re at musically (playing local shows, recording, etc.) you may want to wait until you have a full demo ep, or have at least garnered attention from someone within your community. A lot of radio stations have late night “local flavor” shows where many local musicians can be heard.
As a fifteen year veteran in the local music scene I know its very hard to break in. And unfortunately, record labels do not readily accept “unsolicited material” (millions of people worldwide try to send their albums in to be reviewed, some of them amazing, but all get tossed in the trash.).
What has seemed to work best for my band is to create a myspace band profile. The more friends you have, the better your chances of success on being seen by somebody important. Plus it is extremely simple. Just try and add anybody and everybody you can. From a local demographic, most venues and radio stations (at least in Kansas, where I’m from) book shows on their myspace sites.
All in all, just keep getting the word out about your music, and stay positive! And best of luck spreading your music to the world!
