Information about Music Business Majors?

Question by Jessica: Information about Music Business Majors?
Hi, my name is Jessica. I’m fifteen and I freshman in High School. I’d like to go onto college and be a Music Business Major. I’m looking at schools already, and have looked at curriculum’s-which looked like what I wanted.

Right now, I am taking my high schools only business course, and signed up for Accounting next year, along with sociology.
Which brings me to my first question, what other courses would you recommend? Keep in mind, I do NOT want to be involved in any performance-based classes (such as band).

And my second question, what colleges would you recommend?

Finally, what else can I be doing to prepare for my future?

Thank you!

Hi Jessica!

First of all, if you are primarily interested in business, then you’re making the right move with business and accounting classes, but it would not hurt to take a music theory class, if there is any available at your high school. Music theory is extremely important if you want to succeed at evaluating and changing songs and production. Also, it is important to take as many computer science classes as possible. Technology is key to producing, marketing, and all other aspects of the music industry.

Asbury in KY is good for a music business major, and so is UML, and Barry Kaye at Florida Atlantic. Getting good grades in college is key to getting the internships that you need in order to find a job. You might want to consider an MBA when you graduate, or an M.S. in music business.

If you can find an internship in the music industry while still in high school, you’re very lucky and on the right track.
