Question by Artoro A Li: Creating a foreign workers township…..is it the only solution ? Is an old problem in a new environment.?
In the 70-80s, during our industrialisation period at the west in Jurong and the nearby region, there were cluster of foreign workers being given dwelling places in HDB contracted blocks of rental flats in Jurong & Buona Vista region and the social problems cropped up between local residents & foreign workers. The media was hot on the subject and the Zone B RC at Buona Vista came up with a Social Festive Programme on a Sunday to have the Function: “Local Residents & Foreign Workers Get-Together” to do the shouldering & smoothing of the bad understanding of the whole situation. It was the ONE and Only one Event for the Hot Topic and it was effective for both parties.
It was a real festive day with Food, Fun, performances & games for them to create a happy moment of mutual understanding to show to all in S’pore. There were Thai Boxing, Loykatong parade, Singing band—-all with colourful costumes and dances (at that time is first tme in Spore). The companies employing the workers were involved and sponsored them for the event. The TV news on that night was a great attraction. There was a built up of better understanding to stay together for the benefit of all and the society.

Creating an isolation of a city within a city can have bad effect as well as good depending on the weighing scale.
