As the artist, what kind of contract should I have between myself and the author?

Question by Torn: As the artist, what kind of contract should I have between myself and the author?
I’m a new artist and I have been contacted to have my artwork (my current) on a book cover. Not sure if I should charge or just allow it for free as long as I’m credited in the books references. Any business and legal advice would be helpful.

Thank you all in advance.

Just be careful and if you do a contract make sure you undersatand it and make sure your interested are outlined in it. My mom went through this did a bunch of drawing and spent alot of her time and money on a project, the author ended up royaly screwing my mom and she did not even get credit for her work.
