Q&A: how do you get gigs in portland oregon for world fusion ambient music?

Question by DreamSitar: how do you get gigs in portland oregon for world fusion ambient music?
I’m just starting out here in Portland. I’d been playing open mics, and get really good responses all the places I play, I have an acoustic electric sitar I play as a main feature of my project. I’ve tried to get a hold of the bookers and venue managers in the venues out in gresham and portland, I’ve played a few free shows here and there, but how do you get a gig out here in this city that actually pays you for your act? I’ve gotten free beer, which I don’t drink, so it’s worthless to play at the bars that only say I can have some of their crappy bar food or their watered down alcohol, which I’m a sober person, so alcohol isn’t really a very nice offer to me.
So what do I do to get gigs that pay out here? This city has so many people who play for free, that it’s nearly impossible to get gigs that pay me money for my quality act.
Everyone and their grandmother has and plays guitars and are getting shows out here, so how do I get one as a soloist?
I know several hundreds of bands i could bring to the act with me, I’d not come alone, but I’d have been having problems getting a hold of the bookers and venue owners to book gigs for contract payments.

Now I’ve been wondering about this a while, how do you make money at shows?
How do you get shows that pay you money in this city, where there’s so much incredible
competition for paying gigs by bands?

Try getting a show at the Roseland, even kids at my high school get really good gigs there.
