Well I am not positive on all the details but a friend of mine co-wrote a song years ago that was recorded by a medium band at the time.
To this day it is played occasionally on the radio, and he gets checks from BMI and EMI companies as royalties for his writing work. That’s the good news. Bad news is it’s only about $ 1,000 a year. It depends on how many times it is played (he says he gets a couple cents every time it is played) and when it it on an album sold he gets a couple cents there.
So, he doesn’t get rich off it. He had a bunch of songs published, but basically this is the only one he makes any money on. Another of his the royalties are less than $ 10 a year as it’s not a song played much at all.
