Q&A: Could you get caught pirating software/music if you did so from your computer while connected to hotel wi-fi?

Question by Yowane Haku: Could you get caught pirating software/music if you did so from your computer while connected to hotel wi-fi?
I ask because my school has an agreement with the RIAA to hand over the IP addresses of offenders, and many people have been fined that way.

If you are at a hotel and you use their wi-fi (after signing in, etc), can they see your internet activity? In particular, can they tell if you are using P2P?

If so, would an application like PeerGuardian block them from seeing your internet history or your use of programs like bittorrent?

Thanks! And I know you shouldn’t download music illegally, etc.
