What degree do you need to become a music manager?

Question by Nikki: What degree do you need to become a music manager?
I am working on my BS degree for business and general management. I know there are many jobs I could qualify for, but I was wondering to be a singer or actors manager, am I in the right field or would I have to be in the music field? And also sports managers? Football and basketball players? Would I qualify for that? Or is there a sports field you are supposed to take?

Business and general management will give you a fine background for managing musicians. Of course you will need to devote plenty of time to learning the music business as well. Most concepts will transfer just fine, you just need to get a good understanding of all aspects. Some great books like “All You Need to Know About the Music Business” will be a good start. Besides formal training, you will only become a valuable manager through experience. You could start with internships or other industry related jobs and learn the ropes. Find a promising young band and work with them from beginning – it is very hard otherwise to break into the biz as a manager.
